Evargrius was a supporter of the dogmatic decisions of the First Ecumenical Council and was ordained archbishop of Constantinople by the expell archbishop of Antioch Efstathios. He was expelled by the arian-minded emperor Valens, who brought the arian Demophilus to the see.
