Your Eminence, beloved brother in Christ,
Archbishop Spyridon of America,
Your Grace, beloved brother in Christ Bishop Isaiah of Denver,
Beloved children in the Lord,
We greet each and every one of you with our paternal and Patriarchal blessing, rejoicing in the grace of God that has brought us together this evening. As a father delights in the progress and accomplishments of his sons and daughters, so do we exult in you, the pious clergy and worthy presvyteres of the Diocese of Denver.
We are also deeply moved by your love and devotion for the Mother Church. Although we are separated by thousands and thousands of miles, we are united and inseparable in the love of Jesus Christ. As you are mindful of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in your prayers, your preaching, and your Christian education, we are also mindful of you. We remember your labors, beseeching our Merciful God to give you strength, faith and spiritual endurance.
Here in this vast Diocese, where parishes are often separated by hundreds of miles, we understand the pressures of assimilation and reductionism in matters of Orthodox Faith and Tradition. As the focal point of the parish ministry, we know that the priest and his family bear an enormous responsibility to live out their Orthodoxy, by a witnessing praxis of conduct and testimony. Beloved spiritual children, we want you to know that the Mother Church has an abiding concern for all of you, especially the dear children of your families. The pressures of contemporary society expose them to many dangers, and the responsibilities of parish ministry often exhaust the family’s resources to stand firm in the faith. With all our heart and all our love, we exhort you to stand fast in the traditions of the Orthodox faith as you have received them. These same traditions are a wealth of spiritual power and refreshment. Like springs of water than run deep beneath the surface, you must delve deeply into the traditions of the Fathers, and there you will find “a well of water springing up unto eternal life” (John 4:14). And when you drink of this water, the thirsts, engendered by living in the contemporary world, will be slaked. The love of Him Who said : “I thirst” (John 19:28) will water the dryness of your hearts. It will quench the needs of your souls, and will drown the destructive passions which are fostered by the world.
Beloved children in the Lord, with love we remind you that though you may be in the world, you are not of the world. You have been bought with a price (I Cor. 6:20), and the meaning and purpose to your lives is hidden with Christ in God (cf. Col. 3:3). As ministers of the Word, the Logos of the Living God, you have the highest calling and greatest responsibility. Your families must be spiritually prepared to help you meet the challenges of bringing the Orthodox Faith into the 21st century here in America.
The freedom that this country brings is a two-edged sword. On the one hand, your freedom is a promise of prosperity and even influence in the greater society. On the other hand, in such freedom there is always the danger of license, of hubris. You risk forgetting that with the gift of such freedom, comes great spiritual and moral responsibility.
As your spiritual father, we feel confident that you are well equipped to the task of exercising this freedom with a Christ-centered consciousness. We know that you have the spiritual capacity and the leaders to bring our Orthodox Faith to new heights in America. Under the pastoral care of our beloved brother, His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, and your beloved Bishop Isaiah, you will be provided the vision and the guidance to attain the measure of the stature of the fullness of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 4:13).
And so in closing, we commend you to the love of God. Remember that above all, it is by our love that the world will know that we are Christians (John 13:35). There is no substitute for this love, no excuse for not practicing it, no obstacle that love cannot overcome.
Beloved children in the Lord, abide in that love. And the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ shall keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, Whose peace and infinite mercy be with you all. Amen.
