Your Excellency Ambassador Nassika,

Your Eminences, Excellencies and Graces,

Honorable Guests,

Ἐπιθυμοῦμεν νά ἐκκινήσωμεν τήν ἡμετέραν ὁμιλίαν εἰς τήν ἑλληνικήν γλῶσσαν, τήν γλῶσσαν πού ἀνέδειξε τόν λόγον εἰς ὑψίστην τέχνην καί ἔθρεψε τήν φιλοσοφίαν· τήν γλῶσσαν τοῦ πολιτισμοῦ, ἀλλά καί τοῦ Εὐαγγελίου. Εἰς αὐτήν τήν γλῶσσαν ὡμίλησαν καί ἔγραψαν οἱ Πατέρες τῆς Ἐκκλησίας, συνέθεσαν ὕμνους οἱ σπουδαῖοι ὑμνογράφοι, καί διεμόρφωσαν οἱ μεγάλοι διδάσκαλοι τήν ψυχήν καί τήν ταυτότητα τοῦ Γένους.

Τό Οἰκουμενικόν Πατριαρχεῖον, ὁ πρῶτος Θρόνος τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας, εἶναι ζῶν καί ζωτικός φορεύς αὐτῆς τῆς σπουδαίας παρακαταθήκης. Κατά τούς αἰῶνας τῶν δοκιμασιῶν, ἡ Μεγάλη Ἐκκλησία ὑπῆρξε τό λίκνον καί τό στήριγμα τοῦ Γένους. Ὅταν αἱ πολιτικαί συνθῆκαι ἦσαν δυσμενεῖς, ἡ Ἐκκλησία ἀνελάμβανε νά κρατήσῃ ἀνημμένην τήν κανδήλαν τῆς πίστεως, ὅταν ἐλλόχευεν ὁ κίνδυνος τῆς λήθης, ἐγένετο τό σχολεῖον καί ἡ κιβωτός διατηρήσεως τῆς ἑλληνικῆς  γλώσσης καί παιδείας, ἥνωνε τήν πίστιν μέ τόν πολιτισμόν, κηρύττουσα τήν ἀλήθειαν τοῦ Χριστοῦ καί τήν ἐλευθερίαν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. 

Τό Οἰκουμενικόν Πατριαρχεῖον ἐσφράγισε τήν πορείαν τῶν ἐκκλησιαστικῶν πραγμάτων καί συνεχίζει νά  διακονῇ τό ποίμνιόν του ἀπανταχοῦ τῆς γῆς. Ἀγωνίζεται ἀδιαλείπτως διά τήν προάσπισιν τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης ἀξιοπρεπείας, διά τήν παγκόσμιον εἰρήνην καί τήν ἀλληλεγγύην, διά τήν προαγωγήν τοῦ διαχριστιανικοῦ, διαθρησκειακοῦ καί διαπολιτισμικοῦ διαλόγου καί διά τήν προστασίαν τῆς ἀκεραιότητος τῆς δημιουργίας.

Ἀγαπητοί, 

Ὁ δεσμός τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Χριστοῦ Μεγάλης Ἐκκλησίας μέ τό Γένος εἶναι ἄρρηκτος καί ἀδιάσειστος. Ἐκκινεῖ ἀπό τά βάθη τοῦ παρελθόντος καί ὁδηγεῖ μέ βεβαιότητα πρός τό μέλλον. Καλοῦμεν ἅπαντας ὑμᾶς νά μείνετε ἡνωμένοι μέ τήν Ἱεράν Ἀρχιεπισκοπήν Ἀμερικῆς, καί νά στηρίζετε τό Σεπτόν Κέντρον τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας. Νά διατηρῆτε ζῶσαν τήν ἑλληνικήν γλῶσσαν, τήν παιδείαν καί τήν πίστιν τῶν προγόνων ἡμῶν. Διότι, οὕτω μόνον, τρεφόμενοι ἀπό τάς ρίζας μας, δυνάμεθα νά ἀναδειχθῶμεν ἄξιοι συνεχισταί τῆς τιμαλφεστάτης πνευματικῆς κληρονομίας, ἡ ὁποία, ὡς ἔχει γραφῆ, «ἐξακολουθεῖ νά ἀποτελεῖ ἐλπίδα γιά τό παρόν καί τό μέλλον τοῦ σύγχρονου ἀνθρώπου».

Εὐχόμεθα, χάριτι Θεοῦ, νά πορεύεται το Γένος μας πάντοτε ἡνωμένον καί δημιουργικόν.

Allow us also a few words in English. With great pleasure and joy in our heart, we greet all of you with Patriarchal and paternal blessings, grateful to God for the opportunity to visit once again this great Land and to behold the extraordinary accomplishments brought by the Omogeneia.

Our Patriarchal visits to the United States of America are always complemented by our meetings with our co-workers for peace in the diplomatic world. You serve the whole family of nations by your diligence and effectiveness in keeping lines of communication and dialogue open and assisting the human family in the work of reconciliation and rapprochement.

The Embassy of the Hellenic Republic is at the forefront of this service. Hellenism and its ideals are much more than a territorial possession of the Greeks. As Isocrates is so often quoted:

Ἕλληνες καλοῦνται οἱ τῆς παιδεύσεως τῆς ἡμετέρας μετέχοντες.

Those who partake of our culture are called “Greeks.”

With this in mind, even in the purely spiritual mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, we are the beneficiaries of the conjunction of the ancient Greek spirit and Christian values. And, Ambassador Nassika, we recognize in you and in your tireless efforts the genius of this spirit.

We are glad to be here at Dumbarton Oaks, one of the most important centers for Byzantine Studies in the world, giving tremendous emphasis to the significance of classical Hellenism, which, through its encounter with Christianity, formed the basis of Byzantine civilization, whose center was Constantinople. The religious and cultural traditions of the City of Constantine continue to be affirmed, especially in this year of the Seventeen Hundredth Anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea. What is called the «Nicene Creed» is the theological standard for all of Christianity.

We raise our glass to you and to the Hellenic Republic, which preserves the legacies of the past as promise of the future.
